Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American musician, actress, and rapper. In music, film and on television, Queen Latifah has received the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. as a police officer. Her parents divorced around the age of 10 years old. Latifah, who was born and brought up within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. The stage name Latifah is a reference to delicate and compassionate in Arabic was bestowed to her by her cousin at the age of she was only eight. Latifah is who was 5'10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. As part of a school production she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her beatboxing career. Latifah is among the first members of the Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group of MCs around DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was a member of Latifah in the early days, was impressed by her track. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's first single.
